Fabric Flowers: Shapes
There are 5 ways you can start off your melted flowers, 5 different ways to cut your fabric before we start to melt the edges…
- Cut circles
- Cut out circles and then cut slots into the circle to create petals
- As above but then cut the petals further to round them off
- Cut squares and then cut slots to create petals
- Cut out actual petal shapes
STEPS – Circles
- Determine the exterior diameter desired for your flowers. I would recommend about 6cm for your largest circle to make a lovely sized flower for a newborn tieback. Then cut a number of smaller circles, gradually decreasing in size that will layer up inside.
- Trace around the pattern onto the silk fabric (using a pen).
STEPS – Petals
- Cut squares or circles in progressively smaller sizes.
- Trace around the pattern onto the silk fabric (using a pen).
- When you have all your circles/squares take the scissors and cut some petals. Carefully cut only about a third of the way into the circles to create the petals. You can do as many petals as you would like, or even add some variety to them. I cut five times, making five medium-sized petals. You can also round the corners of the petals, if you so desire.
If you want to be less uniform!…
- You can also cut around the pattern and skip the drawing part
- free hand cut your circle
- cut out a square, fold into quarters then cut an arc across the unfolded right angle
Uniform isn’t necessary. And if it’s not uniform, it adds character. And character is good.
Have fun making lots and lots!!
